Jim manages the development and maintenance of large US and global intellectual
property portfolios using process-centric prosecution that can be individualized
according to client need. He has 25 years of law firm management experience,
18 years as an adjunct professor of patent law, and now serves as a clinical professor.
Jim is a coauthor of multiple editions of the textbook Cases and Materials on Patent Law: Including Trade Secrets, published by West Academic. He has led the firm to a top-tier designation of Best Firms by U.S. News & World Report. He has been repeatedly named a top-rated IP attorney by Michigan Super Lawyers™ and was named a “Top Lawyer” by dbusiness®, and he is included in the directory of Leading Lawyers® published by Law Bulletin Media.
Jim graduated cum laude with degrees in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan. He received his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School. Jim is currently an adjunct professor in patent law at the University of Detroit Mercy Law School. He has served the profession and his community in various leadership positions, including as an Emeritus in the Michigan Intellectual Property Inn of Court, president of the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association, and chairman of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association, as well as chairman of the Planning Commission and member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for his local municipality.
